Born in the Streets GRAFFITI July 7 › Nov. 29, 2009 Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain, 261, boulevard Raspail 75014 Paris – France

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Devoted to graffiti and street art, the exhibition Born in the Streets—Graffiti will bring to light the extraordinary expansion of an artistic movement that developed in the streets of New York in the early 1970s to rapidly become a world-wide phenomenon. Today, graffiti has entered the cultural mainstream, crossing over to the realms of studio art, design and advertising. Yet despite its immense popularity, this essentially illegal activity continues to evolve at the periphery of the contemporary art world, its origins and evolution little-known to the general public. The exhibition at the Fondation Cartier attempts to sketch the general contours of a subject that is vast and complex, encompassing many different ideas, media and movements across its boundaries. With Basco Vazko (Santiago Chili), Cripta (São Paulo), JonOne (Paris), Olivier Kosta-Théfaine (Paris), Barry McGee (San Francisco), Nug (Stockholm), Evan Roth (Honk-Kong), Boris Tellegen / Delta (Amsterdam), Vitché (São Paulo) and Gérard Zlotykamien (Paris)

HOW IS THE RECESSION AFFECTING YOU??? Creative Project…

Friday, August 7th, 2009

To all designers, whether you have worked in the industry for over ten years, a creative director, a university lecturer, final year student, currently doing placements or have just started a career in design. I would love to hear your thoughts. The aim is to do video recorded messages, it can be through your mac/pc camera or an iphone (max 1min). You are free to voice out anything in your message and to be as creative as you want.

The videos will then be published on my website alongside with a wall full of video entries. It will act as a study into the recession within design and the creative industry, it can be easily accessible and shared.

Until we see a sign of recovery within our economy it may be 1yr or 2yrs… or 5yrs down the line, I will request for you to re-make another video to see your progress and career developments and this will draw a comparison and conclude the study. We’re living through it now and I feel it’s worth documenting it and it will indefinitely be part of our history. It just takes a minute!

I truly hope that you are able to contribute, I believe that it’s not only important to know the statistics but to understand fully of what is going on and know how best to ride out the recession. I hope that it will be a good platform to share your views.

Please record your video, label it with your full name and send it to: mail@edshek.com

I look forward to seeing your video entries and they will be published here on August 31.

Many thanks

Ed

This new exhibition showcases a new wave of Swedish design talent, with the work of thirteen fashion and jewellery designers who challenge the stereotypical picture of Swedish fashion as blonde, functional and minimal. Since the late 1990s there has been a growing sense of a new guard emerging – putting the country on the map with a burgeoning number of fashion labels and designers. Created by the Swedish Institute and specially enhanced and adapted for the FTM, this exhibition showcases the bold, the avant-garde and the surprising. Admission prices: £5 for adults, £3 for students and concessions, free for under 12’s

THE BRICK LANE GALLERY-ART IN MIND-30TH APRIL-11TH MAY-2009

Friday, May 8th, 2009

KRAH – HERO – Marlène-B – Katina Riba – Karl Anthoney – Bex Massey
David Barnes – Dolunay Magee – Faba – Gintallia Finlayson-Frost – Herman Noordermeer – Liron Ben Arzi – Tomas Tokle

The next Art in Mind exhibition will present once again a dynamic group show featuring 13 Street and Contemporary artists.

The Brick Lane Gallery is pleased to present the world famous street artist The Krah. Originally from Greece The Krah has been making waves in the UK street art scene and has been painting the streets of London for many years. The Krah’s works can be seen around the Shoreditch and Brick Lane area. Like many street artists his recent projects have been moving into galleries and he has been showing extensively in London, Greece and worldwide. The Krah’s work started several years ago in Greece writing graf and traditional graffiti. His natural progression has evolved towards  a new way of painting which emerges into a contemporary style of street art. The Krah’s signature street works look something between organic and hybrid robot bodies presented with computer monitors and TV heads. Caught within a hyper reality, they observe the situation and world order around them. The TV faces look both happy and sad, they laugh and look pleased and sometimes angry with passers by. The Krah will be showing several new works on canvas and wood board.
