URBAN REFLECTIONS – STILL GALLERY, COCKBURN ST, EDINBURGH – UNTIL 22nd MARCH 2009

Warped, fragmented and endlessly repeated. Responses to the urban experience have ranged from unbridled enthusiasm for these vibrant hubs of glittering prosperity to examinations of the psychological shadows of city living: alienation, anxiety, tension and fear. The current age of global cities is marked by new geographies and social relations moulded by advancing technologies and economic systems. How do contemporary artists respond to these conditions? Urban Reflections presents works by artists from across different generations and locations as they reflect literally and metaphorically on the theme of mirroring the city.

Brisbane Art: Ron Mueck’s “In Bed” @ Optimism Exhibition, Gallery of Modern Art, Southbank

This photo really doesn’t do justice to this piece of art. The base is about 8 metres by 5 metres, and the woman’s head is about 1.7 metres above ground: that is, as tall as an average person. “In Bed” is part of the free Optimism exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art, in the Cultural Centre at Southbank. It’s on until February 22nd 2009.

LONDON FASHION WEEK FEB 18-22

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

London Fashion Week 2009 from Feb 18-22
October 31, 2008 (UK)

Today the British Fashion Council announced the dates for London Fashion Weeks in 2009. February’s dates will be Friday 20th– Tuesday 24th and September’s Friday 18th – Tuesday 22nd. Fashion shows will run throughout, the Exhibition at London Fashion Week will run from Saturday – Tuesday.

In February 2009 there will be a one day overlap with New York as the fashion capitals re-adjust scheduling to accommodate new dates. This overlap follows consultation with designers and media.

Hilary Riva, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council commented: “This February an overlap with New York has been agreed by the majority of designers showing at London Fashion Week. February is the first fashion week of the ‘25 Year Celebrations of British Fashion’ and we look forward to an exciting week showcasing the very best of British design.”

London Fashion Week is one of the UK’s highest profile events. Organised by the British Fashion Council and funded by sponsors including Canon UK which has been headline sponsor for six consecutive seasons, the event is worth £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and generates orders in the region of £100m.

London’s global reputation is a hotbed of world class emerging design talent; the British Fashion Council aims to identify, support and nurture that talent to develop profitable businesses based in London.
