Nairn Book & Arts Festival

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Nairn Festival will be even bigger than ever this year. A very busy week will feature writers such as Christopher Brookmyre, William Dalrymple, Dr Christopher Duffy, Janice Galloway, Isla Dewar, Bernard McLaverty, Lesley Riddoch, Cameron McNeish, Professor Robert Crawford and Professor Tom Devine.

Nairn Book & Arts Festival, however, offers much more than prestigious writers: as you will see in this programme there will be a greater emphasis on the visual arts with exhibitions, competitions and workshops for all ages.

We will be hosting two well-known stand-up comedians, Jeremy Hardy, and Andy Hamilton, both regulars on the BBC and at the Edinburgh Festival, and dramatic and musical performances by local and international artists. We will be featuring traditional Scottish musicians such as the Vass Twins, Anna Massie and Julie Fowlis and her band who recently won a BBC Folk Music award and now have an international reputation. The Carducci Quartet and James Barralet will bring international standard chamber music.

The impressive new Community Centre and refurbished Court House along with our traditional venues will offer audiences some excellent acoustics and comfortable settings in which to enjoy the Festival.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

Edinburgh International Film Festival from 18 – 29 June 2008

For the first time in over 60 years, the 2008 Edinburgh International Film Festival will be held in June (18th-29th June 2008) in a bid to raise the profile of the event and the films being showcased.

This is one film festival where the films are the stars, so expect some real cinematic treats from every corner of the globe. In previous years, Edinburgh film festival goers have been able to get an insight into the production process with talks by directors, enjoy advance screenings of rough cuts of new films and indulge in some serious star spotting at glamorous galas and premieres.

With 142 features from 29 countries and a staggering 15 World Premieres, the 62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival is bringing films to light.

Two of Hollywood’s hottest film stars, Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller, are set to launch the 2008 Festival, at the opening night premiere of ‘The Edge of Love’, a film based on the life of free-spirited Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
