MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Rebecca Hywel Jones

I am a costume designer and maker for film, T.V and theatre with a vast range of work experience and a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art. ‘Poirot and Pierette’ from the ‘Affair at Victory Ball’ by Agatha Christie. Both of these costumes were designed in a historically accurate 1930’s context for a film performance. Poirot, the famous Belgian detective, wears a custom tailored suit for which I completed a work placement at a Savile Row tailors to learn the techniques required. He also wears a hand made hat and sourced vintage accessories. Pierette, a lonely housewife attending a masquerade ball, wears a tailored jacket made from a fabric that I designed myself, and a cream skirt worn over a petticoat. These are accompanied by hand made accessories including covered shoes to match the jacket. Alongside these two costumes I also completed a third for the lonely and childish character of ‘Lady Fuchsia’ from ‘Gormenghast’ by Mervyn Peake. This costume was based on modern Haute Couture and Chinese Tang Dynasty research and relied heavily on textile manipulation including my own dyed fabrics and hand embroidered pieces. Accompanying this costume is a marionette monkey puppet and a doll.
